From the artist
I am 33 years old from the Western US, currently living in a small town outside of Florence with my wife and three little ones. I have been an artist for as long as I can remember. I pursued it through grade-school and started in college, but when I was 21, I pursued another dream full-time and my art became a hobby. From 2008 to 2019 I worked in various positions in Utah as a police officer, spending days off in my studio and out painting en plein air. In this career the most rewarding times were in instructing positions and helping people in the community, but after spending over a decade seeing so much darkness and ugly in the world, I decided to devote all my time on art and beauty. After coming to this decision in 2018, and while still employed with the State police, I attended short-courses in Utah at the Beaux-Arts Academy under Nikki Covington, and the Masters Academy of Art with Ryan Brown. I completed an Associate’s Degree at Snow College—in which art program I studied anatomy, drawing, oil painting, figure drawing, écorché, and figure sculpture—and after being accepted to the Florence Academy of Art my wife and I left our employment, sold everything, and moved to Florence.
I attended the Florence Academy of Art for one term before being accepted to the Florence Classical Arts Academy (Russian Academy). The instructors here are incredibly involved, motivating mentors who have graduated from the Repin Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg. The curriculum and instruction is rich with the grammar of Classical Art, and their approach to color is thorough and intuitive. I am currently enrolled at the Russian Academy in the second year on a scholarship granted through the school’s donor.
Living in Tuscany gives me the wonderful opportunity to also learn from the great masters of the Italian Renaissance, and I devote many hours in the churches and museums studying, sketching, and learning.
In addition to my academic studies I am an avid plein air painter, motivated by a love of being outdoors and my conviction that nature is the greatest source of instruction—providing infinite solutions to color and the elements of design. I have always been drawn to Western Art, French Impressionism, and Russian Impressionism, and I’ve noticed my work shows influences of Maynard Dixon, Sisley, Levitan, and Arkhipov, among others.
